Middle School Students Paint Mural For Peace

Perkiomen Valley Middle School West students incorporate images representing peace and equality into latest mural.

Perkiomen Valley Middle School West’s Mural Club finished its fifth and final mural in May, a colorful work that features a “Peace and Equality” theme, inspired by artist Peter Max. Max’s iconic psychedelic images portray peace, happiness and cultural awareness. Students looked to his work to come up with some of the images they incorporated into the mural, such as the peace sign, the peace hand gesture, an equality banner being pulled by an airplane, and the yin-yang symbol. Other images include smiley faces, hearts, and a heart made out of puzzle pieces. Quotes about peace from influential people throughout history are scattered throughout the mural. Some are from role models like Mother Teresa while others are from musical artists, such…

History Boys: PV West Students Learn About Jefferson, Hamilton

Middle school's history lesson includes a walk through exhibits on two founding fathers.

Perkiomen Valley Middle School West students wandered through history Thursday as they browsed the library's exhibits on Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. The students collected facts about these founding fathers, looked at items and codes that would have come out of their time, and whispered in awe when they saw a copy of the Declaration of Independence, handwritten by eighth grader Nate Yoder. Computer activities for the students included a quiz on whether he/she was more like Hamilton or Jefferson, and a chance to virtually build a Monticello. Teacher Sean Murphy credited colleague Amy Costigan with putting together the exhibit on Jefferson, noting how difficult it was to gather items because Jefferson "died penniless" and had …

Seventh-grader Ben Minardi scored a goal less than a minute into overtime to propel the Vikings' A-3 squad to a 9-8 victory over Visitation lacrosse. The Perkiomen Valley Middle School East student took a feed from Nick Sconna to beat the goaltender, starting the celebration for the orange and brown. “I feel great,” said Minardi. “It was pretty cool to get mobbed by my teammates. I saw there was space between the goalie and their defenders, so I just went between them and got the shot past him.” At one point the Vikings led by a score of 7-4, then Visitation mounted a comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to take an 8-7 lead with three minutes to go in the game. East eighth grader Nick Sconna tied the game with 2:45 left, setting the …
