I live in Blue Bell on Walton Rd and on Feb 8th (at 7;50 am) I saw a black bear. At first I thought it was my 100lb Bernese Mnt dog walking down our lane, but then I took another look and realized that what I was seeing was too big. I was definitly looking at a bear! No one believed me (why would a bear be in Blue Bell?)...until this story came out on the news this weekend.   more ›

Reader: Lower Frederick Among Bear-Sighting Spots

Franconia residents spotted a black bear this past week.

Lower Frederick residents have seen a bear around the township, according to an e-mail to Perkiomen Valley Patch. The message stated that one person saw a bear coming up from the Perkiomen Creek to Colonial Drive, and another person claimed to have seen a bear around Salford Station Road. A bear sighting in Fraconia Township recently made headlines, with residents spotting the furry visitor wandering through backyards and across the street from Vineland Elementary School, according to an NBC report. The bear, which wildlife officials believe is a young male who recently left its mother, was described as "just ambling through, kind of lost, not provoked, not aggressive,” in a witness account to NBC. It is not known whether the bear …

He was seen walking along the creek behind the Firehouse in Schwenksville on Friday, then on Saturday I understand the Game Commission got him a little south of that area.I was told he had tags on ears, so they know where he came from. I am sure he is Bradford County by now.   more ›

Crowds Turn Out for Lower Frederick Easter Egg Hunt

Children scour Coble Park, filling Easter buckets and baskets

While cooler temperatures, cloudy skies and morning rain impacted the 2011 egg hunt's turnout at Lower Frederick's Coble Park, the sunny skies and warmer weather encouraged more local residents to stop by for the April 7, 2012 event. The park split the hunt according to the children's ages. Thirty-six "winner" eggs were scattered throughout the grounds, and the finders were entitled to candy or small toys on one of the tables. The Easter Bunny was also on hand to pose for photos and dispense hugs and high fives.

in regards to these burglaries it seems as though some good old fashioned vigilantiism is in order. Neighbors need to be more conscious of suspicious persons and activities in their prospective communities. Instead of turning a blind eye, confront these hooligans. There is far too many good people who work hard falling prey to these acts of cowardice and treachery. Thievery itself is a common …   more ›

Bullet Breaks Window in Lower Frederick

Police are investigating the incident, which is not believed to be hunting related

When you hear about a bullet breaking a window in someone’s home, an assumption that the incident occurred in an urban setting is a fair one, so when Ken Ford of Lower Frederick Township found a bullet hole in a window in his home, he was understandably surprised and concerned. Ford discovered a stray bullet during the holidays, causing nothing but property damage, but raising concerns about how the incident occurred. Ford lives on Christina Circle in Lower Frederick Township, and when he returned home from a day of skiing with his two young children at Spring Mountain, he noticed his office window was broken, and the culprit was a .45 bullet. The bullet hit Ford’s office window, but was found on the window sill and did not enter the house…

Ron Kerwood Takes Spot on Lower Frederick Board of Supervisors

The newest member talks what he likes about the township, and what he hopes to see in the future.

Ron Kerwood was voted in for a six-year term as the newest member of Lower Frederick’s Board of Supervisors, replacing Loren Szczesny at the township's annual reorganizational meeting Tuesday night. Szczesny decided not to run for supervisor, leaving an open position. Kerwood says township supervisor Ernie Schmitt approached him about the position because he wanted someone who was already involved in the township. Kerwood has been a member of the park board for one year, and because that is not an elected position, he was able to be voted in as township supervisor and also be a member of the park board. Kerwood and his wife have lived in Lower Frederick Township for close to eight years, and the rural setting and large park system is what …

Jacobs was allegedly firing a gun during the fight. A standoff with police ensued after the reported incident. It's unfortunate that this continues to be called a standoff, making it sound more dramatic than it really was. The reason there was a delay in him being taken into custody was that local law enforcement wanted to wait for the swat-type team to arrive, and that took a long time. That very problem was cited by the Lower Frederick chief in another story you published recently.   more ›
