PJP II Student Seriously Injured in Golden Panthers/Methacton Warriors game

Pope John Paul II junior Nick Howarth was transported via medical helicopter to University of Pennsylvania hospital for serious injuries at the weekend game.

According to a Times Herald article, Pope John Paul II High School junior Nick Howarth was seriously injured while playing in a football game against Methacton High School, Sept. 22. The article states that Howarth, “was sandwiched on a kickoff return,” and lay immobilized on the field for approximately 20 minutes before being taken away in an ambulance. Howarth was said to be responsive, but was transported by medical helicopter to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, and was listed in serious condition. The PJP II Golden Panthers sustained another injury, according to the Herald, when its QB, junior James Bleming, was hit by the goal line and left with a collarbone injury, which may be season ending. Pope John Paul II Boys Soccer Kicks Off Their First Game

The PJPII boys Panthers fought hard for their 5-2 win against the Phoenixville Phantoms.

There's no doubt that the PJPII boys varsity soccer team can come together in the most dire of situations, and they certainly proved that tonight at Phoenixville by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to a 5-2 win. "I think we were pretty lucky in that our first half performance was not that great," said head coach Jerry DeLeo. "Phoenixville played excellent." Despite being down two goals going into the second half, the boys never gave up. Scoring their first goal on a penalty kick was senior Pete DeLeo. "We drew a penalty kick in the second half when we were down two to nothing, and that started an avalanche of goals," said DeLeo. The avalanche of goals was continued by Pete DeLeo, who scored his second goal on a corner, and Nick Mares, whose …

PJPII Boys Soccer Team Gets Kicking

The boys soccer team played its first scrimmage against Upper Merion Wednesday.

The PJPII Panthers boys soccer team showed the Upper Merion Trojans what they're all about in their 2-0 win at the scrimmage Wednesday. Last year, the Panthers' overall record was 5-9-1, and 5-8 in the league. Coach Jerry DeLeo expressed some concern about this year's team. "We are concerned about a lack of veteran leadership," DeLeo said. "Last year, we graduated nine seniors. Overall, we are young in that we had six sophomores with the expectation they make positive contributions to the success of the team. Until now, our current group of four seniors haven't been asked to play leadership roles on their team. So, this year, they will have to step up if we are to have a cohesive group." Yesterday, the boys played a very good game. The …

Viking Fab Four Make an Impact in Montco All-Star Game

The 44th Montgomery County All-Star football classic was presented by the Maxwell Football Club and Souderton Rotary Club.

Any of the 3,200 people in attendance at the 2011 Montgomery County All-Star Classic who wanted to see a knock-down, drag-out battle to the end were probably disappointed with Monday night’s 38-14 outcome. In what will probably never be confused with a classic clash, the South rose again to claim the hardware and bragging rights in the 44th annual gridiron meeting. It was, for many, the last time they would step onto a football field to compete. What fans did witness was an outstanding display of the area's best senior talent in a unique environment that has arch rivals playing together for one purpose and one cause. “It was cool playing with guys that are usually trying to kill you,” said Upper Dublin defensive end Ryan Hopkins. “It has …

High School Baseball: Panthers are Golden as They Pound Phoenixville

The final score was PJP2 17, Phantoms 4.

It wasn’t surprising that the Golden Panthers took the field with a bit of a chip on their collective shoulders. Despite winning five of their last six games—including a last at-bat comeback win at AAAA Perkiomen Valley on Wednesday night—the Pope John Paul II squad was informed shortly before it boarded the buses to Phoenixville that due to a “less than special” tie-breaking system, they had been left out of the mix for the Pac-10 final four. This would stand regardless of the outcome of Thursday’s tilt with the Phantoms. “It really pissed us off,” said third basemen Paul Mills. “After last night, all any of us talked about all day at school was what we had to do today and winning the Pac-10 title. It’s a weird situation because if …

High School Baseball: Vikings fall to Golden Panthers

Pope John Paul II 2, Perkiomen Valley 1

The following was provided by David Feight: Pope John Paul pitcher Jeff Evans tossed a complete game, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits. The Golden Panthers plated the winning run in the top of the 7th inning on a 2 out RBI single by Sal DiPrinzio scoring Tyler Mikell.  The hardluck loser was Kenny Wolf, who also pitched a complete game allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Paul Mills put the Golden Panthers on the board first with a solo homer in the 4th; their first hit of the game. Perkiomen Valley tied the game in the fifth on the RBI single by Andrew Kenney plating Ryan D'Ambrosio. Dave Leggieri was 2-3 on the night.

High School Girls Lacrosse: Gansz Nets 100th Goal as Vikings Beat Golden Panthers

The final score was Perkiomen Valley 18, Pope John Paul II 7.

Perkiomen Valley senior Amber Gansz recorded the 100th goal of her outstanding career in an 18-7 Pioneer Athletic Conference victory for the Vikings over Pope John Paul II. Gansz, who will attend Rensselear Polytechnic Institute next fall to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, scored six goals that night. It was on a feed from longtime friend and teammate Andrea Berenato, with 8:16 remaining in the first half, that she eclipsed the century mark. “I was on the sideline, and I told the coach that I was going in and going to have the assist on Amber’s 100th,” said Berenato, who posted six goals of her own Monday night. “We have played together since we were in seventh grade; it will be so hard when we take these jerseys off for the …

High School Softball: Golden Panthers beat Phantoms, have help getting into playoff hunt

Pope John Paul II 6, Phoenixville 3

The sign of any good team is the ability to be able to recover from unexpected adversity or bounce back from a “bad loss.” On Thursday afternoon the Golden Panthers--with the sting of Tuesday’s heartbreaking loss to Spring-Ford still healing--took to the field on a mission to get the momentum back in what has been an entertaining first season. On Tuesday, Pope John Paul II lost more than a game as starting senior pitcher Nikki Troisi had her pitching hand cut on a plate at the plate. The injury required four stitches, and it will force the Golden Panthers' hurler out of the lineup for up to two weeks. Despite being out-hit by the Phantoms by a six-to-five margin, PJP2 used flawless defense and timely hitting to post a 6-3 Pioneer Athletic …

High School Lacrosse: Vikings bounce back with 18-7 win over Pope John Paul II

The final score was Perkiomen Valley 18, Pope John Paul II 7

Heading into this season, Perkiomen Valley freshman Shaun Dickey was looking just to make the squad, any squad. Dickey has far exceeded his own or the coaching staff’s expectations. He's not only made the team, he has become an integral part of the Vikings' varsity offense. On Monday afternoon, as the Vikings traveled to the den of the Golden Panthers of Pope John Paul II, it was Dickey who helped propel Perk Valley to an 18-7 win with five points overall and a hat trick.     “When I came into the first week of practice I was almost overwhelmed,” said Dickey. “I knew that if I wanted to play that I would have to work to get there. I pick up my stick every day and work on drills all the time.” All of the hard work is paying off for Dickey …
