Moms Talk: Live theater experiences

You don't have to hit Broadway for cultural exposure.

It’s that time of week once again for a little Mom Talk. Patch takes the chance to inform our readers: moms, dads, grandparents and family friends alike, to inform you each week of something new. I don’t think they are quite ready for a Broadway show, but I’d love to work more live theater into their routine.    Do you know of any good spots in Montgomery County to have them experience that? I feel like a trip downtown might be too much, and at their ages (6 and 10), I am not sure what levels would be best.    Any suggestions? Sincerely, Janet M., of Norristown Thanks, Janet, for the question. There are a…

It's Spring Musical Season in the Perkiomen Valley

This spring, the PV community is invited on a journey to the Emerald City of Oz, the Land of Enchantment known as Agrabah, and a factory called Sleeptite.

This weekend kicks off the spring musical season in the Perkiomen Valley secondary schools. Performances at both middle schools and the high school offer something for everyone. Mark your calendars now for several unforgettable performances by talented PV students. "The Wizard of Oz" opens this weekend in the Spahr Auditorium at Perkiomen Valley Middle School East. Under the direction of  Kathy Gittelman, more than 100 East sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have been rehearsing for this show since October. "I picked 'The Wizard of Oz' because it's a childhood favorite," Gittelman said. "The key is to choose a favorite that has a lesson, and can accommodate many children." Assisted by East teachers Ann Fleischer, Erin McMonagle and …

'The Wizard of Oz' Translates to Today's Youth

Middle school production goes live this weekend.

The world is a far different place than when Victor Flemming directed a young Judy Garland, Ray Bolger and Frank Morgan into cinematic history in 1939, with arguably one of the most popular movies of all time, "The Wizard of Oz." On Friday night, the Perkiomen Valley Middle School East drama club will raise the curtain on its version of the classic based on the L. Frank Baum book, tossing in references to street lingo, text talk and even Lady Gaga. The portrayal of the Cowardly Lion by seventh grader Jenna Venafra must have Bert Lahr, the original frightened feline, smiling down from above. She perfectly captures Lahr’s voice inflections and mannerisms. The sets and costumes have been built, refined and recomposed by an army of volunteers…
