Forecasts call for snow to begin an hour or two before dawn Monday.
Last updated 1:00 a.m. Monday A winter storm expected to deposit anywhere from two to six inches of snow on the Montgomery County area will arrive shortly before dawn on Monday and continue for most of the day, according to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service. As much as a half-inch of snow could already be on the ground by the time daylight breaks. The timing of the snow could make for a slow morning commute on the region's roads. Falling snow and winds from 10-20 miles per hour could impact visibility, which is expected to be a half-mile or less. We will be on the northern fringes of a storm system on Wednesday, with some snow or rain expected. Worst impacts stay south of our area.
A large storm will cross the country through early Thursday, bringing snow and rain in its path as it marches southeast and then east once it gets into the Ohio Valley. This storm will bring varied levels of impact to the region, with the worst to our south, southwest, and along the coast. Locally, winds will gust to 40 mph and we'll get intervals of rain and snow showers, especially as one gets closer to Philadelphia. The far northern parts of the suburban counties may not see that much precipitation. After a near miss on snow this past Friday night, Monday rains will wash away what little is left on the ground, leaving a "typical" temperature pattern for mid-February for the rest of the week.
Friday's near miss storm was literally that ― we were about 50 miles away from getting several additional inches of snow in your backyard as many areas of northern New Jersey and coastal areas of central New Jersey ended up getting ten or more inches of snow. Locally, anywhere from trace amounts to six inches fell from Chester County to Bucks, with the city getting anywhere from a few tenths of an inch at the naval yards to nearly five inches in the Northeast. Most of that snow washes away with Monday's rains moving through, some of which will be steady if not heavy for a time. "Khan" is expected to drop one to two inches of snow in the western suburbs of Philadelphia starting late Friday afternoon.
The light snow that is forecast to impact the Friday evening commute in the Philadelphia region now has a name, thanks to the Weather Channel. "Winter Storm Khan" may result in up to a half-inch of ice accumulation, which could lead to power outages and "major travel issues," the network said in explaining its rationale for naming the storm. Winter's making a prolonged appearance this week...and it could snow more than once before the week is out.
The incoming cold regime will bring some rather cold temperatures by Philadelphia standards to our region ― highs on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday may not break 30 degrees as we get in the grip of some pretty cold air across the eastern half of the nation. This cold has been largely in the Great Basin so far this month ― parts of Nevada are running more than twenty degrees below normal! Temperatures here won't be that cold, but could go down to ten degrees colder than average over the coming week. After flirting with March-like temperatures, we're going to return to winter around the Delaware Valley, with colder temperatures lurking down the line.
Reality in January isn't temperatures in the 50s or even 60s. "Normal" is highs in the 30s to around 40, which is the air that's more likely in our cards over the coming days. A cold front slides on through during the course of Monday and begins the downward descent in temperatures, with our temperatures dropping from the upper half of the 50s on Monday morning to lower 30s around the region by Tuesday morning. Along with the frontal passage, a wave of energy will push northeast along the front and spread light rain and, perhaps, some light snow along with it. I love winter. All of it. The cold, the outdoor activities, the hunkering down. I even love the snow. But I know winter isn't everyone's favorite season. Some people just survive the cold-weather months. Loving them isn't even a pipe dream. Wherever you fall on the winter-loving spectrum, here are some great tips to help you weather the 67 days until the first day of spring (March 20). Wet boots solution - Fill a large baking tray or serving tray with pebbles or river rocks. You may be able to collect your own, or find the rocks at a craft store or dollar store. A crisp week of weather is ahead of us...and potential for some light snow on Tuesday in the forecast.
This month is shaping up as not only our first month of below average temperatures since August of last year, but also, potentially, the coldest November since the late 1990s. Before you fret and wonder if this is the beginning of a long, cold winter of discontent, November is not necessarily a harbinger of what winter will bring. Several cold Novembers have been followed by warm winters (2007, 1997, 1996 to name three over the last couple of decades). This November will close on the same chilled note on which it began, as temperatures for the balance of the month will average out a few degrees below normal. A winter storm featuring wind gusts up to fifty miles per hour is expected to begin depositing up to five inches of snow on the area beginning Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory and a wind advisory for all of Montgomery County. Light rain and snow that arrives Wednesday morning is expected to intensify in the form of snow during the afternoon hours as temperatures remain in the mid-to-upper 30s. There was nothing nice about the weather last week and there will be nothing nice about Wednesday's nor'easter either, but odds favor a wonderful weekend of Fall weather are on the horizon.
Many people are still picking up the pieces in the wake of Hurricane Sandy's path across our region last week. Millions lost power at one point, billions of dollars in damage likely, and numerous communities beat down and destroyed by the wrath of a late season hurricane that will never be forgotten by some area residents. Pouring some salt on the open wound that is still across the region is another coastal storm likely to impact us on Wednesday into Thursday. Computer modeling suggests the brunt of the nor'easter will be felt on Wednesday afternoon into Thursday before it pulls away.
