Child Killed in School Bullying Incident to be Honored at Phillies Game

12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died from injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident, will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies during their home game against the Red Sox on May 29.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced they will dedicate their home game on May 29 to the memory of 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died as a result of injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident in March. "We extended the invite to the O'Neill family, and they graciously accepted," said Scott Palmer, Public Affairs Director for the Philadelphia Phillies. "Now we're working on planning out the rest of the day." Bailey's father, Robert, was overjoyed to hear the news that his son—a staunch Phillies fan—would be honored by his favorite team. “This is wonderful news, and we’re so thankful for the Phillies to reach out to our family and dedicate a home game to Bailey’s memory," said Robert O'Neill. "It’s so exciting that people…

Bullying may be defined as the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterized by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person. If this is the case then yes it was bullying. From some of the accounts I read Bailey had an altercation on the playground where he was punched in the face by one …   more ›

Packed amongst the bats and balls were: For the full list of the truck's contents, click on the CBS Philly story. According to the Phillies' website, the team has practiced in Clearwater since 1948. Collegeville Italian Bakery has two suite-level tickets for raffle to auction to raise money for slain Police Officer Bradley Fox’s Family – Raffle ends tomorrow at noon.

A surge of community support has risen in the wake of Plymouth Township Police Officer Bradley Fox’s death. Among those in the business community wanting to help Fox’s family is the Collegeville Italian Bakery, located along Ridge Pike in Collegeville. The bakery’s co-owners and husband and wife-team, Patrizia and Steve Carcarey, will auction off two EMC Suite Level tickets to the Friday, Sept. 21 Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves game at Citizens Bank Park. "We didn’t want it to go to waste,” Steve Carcarey said. “We thought the best opportunity to help would be to auction these off and give all the proceeds to the Fox family.” The game is set for 7:05 p.m., and, specifically, the seats are numbers 1 and 2 in Suite 59. Is Phillies' Pitching Worth the Price?

Philadelphia Phillies contract to ace Cole Hamels puts a lot of payroll in pitchers.

To the delight of most Philadelphia Phillies fans, Cole Hamels will be wearing pinstripes for a number of years to come. With the signing of Hamels to a six-year, $144 million deal with a vesting option for a seventh year, the Phillies are telling fans that they haven't thrown in the towel, even if this season might be lost. Hamels' contract is the richest in team history. (Yes, it tops Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Ryan Howard, Roy Halladay, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.) But is the price for pitching worth it?  Vote in our poll and tell us what you think in the comments section below. With Hamels locked up, the Phillies have now invested $68 million in three starting pitchers for 2013. That's a lot of green for Hamels, Halladay and Cliff…

Dino, all Amaro has done is open the check book for high priced players. ANYONE could sign Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, etc... if they had that payroll. What good GMs do is find young cheap players that can help the team for years before getting big money deals that break the bank and put you in a luxury tax situation. In fact as much as people hated Ed Wade, he was the one that found Howard, Utley, …   more ›

Philly Sports: Panic-delphia

Fans have reasons to worry, but don't lose hope.

It's been a rough few days for both the Phillies and the Eagles, so we're breaking out our trusty sports psychology hats to talk a few people off the ledge. Think happy thoughts! Reasons to worry: Nate Allen – Free Safety Allen had a miserable game on Thursday, as he was completely abused by Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh offense. He was frequently out of position, and when he was beaten, he was beaten badly. On the bright side, Allen is a second-year player coming off a knee injury. He's learning a new defense and unlike the Steelers, the Eagles do not scheme for preseason games. It's troubling, but not worth picking out a spot on the Walt Whitman. Asante Samuel – Left CB With Asomugha shutting down the right side, teams are going …

An Embarrassment of Riches

It was a good week for Philadelphia sports fans hoping to see their teams improve via the trade market.

It’s been an unprecedented week of player movement and acquisitions, with the Eagles picking up five new Pro Bowlers and the Phillies finally getting that coveted right-handed bat. For the moment, Philadelphia has become the center of the sports world, with talk radio and ESPN seemingly talking Phillies and Eagles round the clock, so this week, we’re going to take a look back at some of the major moves and evaluate their potential impact on their teams. Hunter Pence It’s always a lovely sight when someone calls their shot and ends up being correct. That’s especially true when a certain Perkiomen Valley Patch contributor stated that Pence would most likely be traded to the Phillies in exchange for Singleton, Cosart and two career minor …

Hits and Misses for the Phillies

Let's talk baseball in Part I of this week's Phour for Phour.

Welcome to a special two-part edition of Phour for Phour! With the NFL lockout officially over and the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, we’ve decided to break our weekly column into two parts. Let’s take a look at some of the wild trade rumors that surround the Phillies as they close in on Sunday’s trade deadline. Batter up! There’s been a bunch of speculation revolving around possibly moving Domonic Brown or Vance Worley in a trade for a right-handed bat. I’m here to tell you that moving either player would be a a historically bad decision. First, consider the fact that the Phillies are leading the National League in offense during the month of July, averaging just over six runs scored per game. Sure, a right handed bat is needed, …

Phour for Phour: Grading the Phillies

Midseason awards for performance.

Welcome back, Patch readers! Now that half of the baseball season is in the books, we're going to change things up for the week as we hand out our midseason grades and awards. We'll also announce the winner of last week's Phillies ticket giveaway. It's been a historically great half for the Phillies, in which they tied their record for most first-half wins. They're sitting pretty with a 3.5 game lead over Atlanta, and the All-Star Break should serve the team well, giving the walking wounded a chance to heal and rest. Put on your hindsight goggles! PITCHING:  A+ The Phillies enter the break with the best pitching staff in baseball, having an overall team ERA of 3.02 through 91 games. While that's an impressive statistic, a closer look at …

Phour for Phour

Phour is the Magic Number

There's the Fourth of July, four all-stars, four wins and free Phillies tickets.

Happy Fourth of July, loyal Norristown Patch readers! You'll also have a shot at a free pair of Phillies tickets as we celebrate our independence while trying to lose our fingers. USA! Three Aces and a Third Baseman The Phillies will be well represented in the 2011 All-Star Game, with Halladay, Hamels and Lee all being selected to the Midsummer Classic.  Also joining the trio of starting pitchers is third baseman Placido Polanco and possibly Shane Victorino, who currently leads the fan vote for the final All-Star opening. Notable names that could have made a case …

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

The Phillies welcome a new fan, the Flyers say farewell to their captain, and Cliff Lee goes back to back.

Welcome back to another round of Phour for Phour. This week, we will take a look at Cliff Lee throwing back to back shutouts, the Flyers making headlines by trading their team captain, and Oswalt being back on the disabled list. We also want to point out that it was "Winner's Weekend" for Patch readers, as five readers who won tickets to a Phillies game got to see Halladay dominate the A's, and another pair of readers watched the Union stink up the first half, only to have them play their best ball of the season in the second. Be on the lookout next week for another pair of free Phillies tickets, but until then, let's get down to business. Game on! Back to Back Cliff Lee seems to have knocked off the rust, as he put together back to back …
