Romney Bus Pulls into MontCo for Nomination Watch Party

GOP volunteers and supporters gathered in a Conshohocken office to watch Romney accept the party's nomination at the Republican National Convention Thursday night.

Drivers on Ridge Pike in Conshohocken likely did a few double takes Thursday evening, as they drove past a big, shiny Romney campaign bus in the parking lot of the Plymouth Square Shopping Center. The bus, nicknamed "Reagan" by campaign staff of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, is one of three tour buses used nationwide by the campaign. However, this time it wasn't carrying Romney or running mate Paul Ryan, who were a thousand miles away at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., but acting as a main attraction for a watch party organized by high-level Pennsylvania staff. "We did an in-state bus tour this week, starting in Erie and traveling down to Pittsburgh, Gettysburg and Villanova," said Billy Pitman, …

Paul Ryan’s Visit Energizes Local Republicans

The economy and entitlements were hot issues.

For the many Republicans who gathered at Paul Ryan’s Tuesday visit to the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, the current state of the economy was a huge issue. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people attended the event, campaign volunteers estimated. Many present also expressed concern about the need for smaller government and about entitlement programs and their sustainability.  “I’m concerned about the economy, as everybody is,” said Chet Walker, of Birmingham Township, when asked why he’s supporting the Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan ticket. “And about the job situation.” Walker added he was disappointed in the Democrats who protested outside and who went in to disrupt Ryan’s speech. “I think he understands the severity of the situation this …

Protesters: Ryan and Akin the Same on Abortion

A group of about 25 picketed the Republican vice presidential candidate's Aug. 21 speech in West Chester.

An overwhelming majority of the crowd that gathered at West Chester’s American Helicopter Museum on Tuesday to see Paul Ryan did so in support of the Republican vice presidential candidate. Andrea Lynch was not in this majority. “I am a woman, and I have three daughters, and this is appalling to me. We are moving backwards in our rights and even respect,” said Lynch, a Malvern resident who was one of roughly 25 protesters who clustered along the venue's Airport Road entrance in the run-up to the 3:30 p.m. speech. Lynch, like many of the picketers, was incensed by what she views as the Republican ticket’s hostility to abortion rights. She carried two placards: one that read “Catholic Mother for Choice” another that asked “What is Legitimate…

Paul Ryan Stumps for Small Government in West Chester

Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan made a campaign stop in West Chester Tuesday at the American Helicopter Museum.

West Chester resident Bob Gross served in the military.  He’s a former Marine, and he’s tired of the nonsense. “Where do you begin,” Gross said.  “The country is $6 trillion in debt.  We’re socializing and nationalizing our businesses, and we’re wasting billions on companies like Solyndra that go bankrupt in a couple of days.” Gross added, “I am tired of the nonsense in Washington.” Gross echoed the sentiment expressed by Vice Presidential Nominee Paul Ryan who visited the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester Tuesday. “Government is important to a society,” Ryan said.  “But it is not the nucleus.  The nucleus is ‘we the people.’” Ryan added, “Government’s job is not to pick winners and losers in the economy.  That job is for our …

Pa. Mayors React to Romney's Choice of Paul Ryan for Running Mate

Mayors of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Allentown weigh in on Romney's running mate.

The Democratic National Committee Rapid Response Team issued a release on Sunday featuring statements from three Pennsylvania mayors – Philadelphia's Michael Nutter, Pittsburgh's Luke Ravenstahl and Allentown's Ed Pawlowski – on Mitt Romney's choice of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as running mate. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter: "If there was any doubt that Mitt Romney was the wrong choice for people in Philadelphia and cities across this country, today’s pick of Paul Ryan as a running mate makes it crystal clear just how wrong his priorities are.  The Romney Ryan budget is an attack on our most precious resource, the very people who make up the fabric of this country: our parents, our children, our soldiers and our seniors.    "Paul Ryan is the…

Ryan a Strong VP Choice Say Pa. Republicans

Red Keystone Snap Poll shows strong support for Ryan among Pennsylvania Republicans.

A snap Red Keystone survey of GOP activists in Pennsylvania by Patch shows strong support for U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s choice for running mate. Ryan as vice presidential nominee will help galvanize Republican voters in the Keystone State, according to more than two thirds of respondents. More than half also say Ryan will help the GOP ticket win undecided voters. Respondents aren’t concerned that Democrats can win by running against Ryan's existing budget plans and particularly his proposal for Medicare. Several respondents noted that Ryan will help the GOP win young voters.  But one Republican commented, “I don't believe that a VP pick ultimately changes elections. Perhaps the last time it did was in 1960.” Here are other …
