Facebook Phishing Scheme: Montco Residents Beware

Facecrooks.com warns of a new scam aimed to get your personal info.

You don't have to be Manti Te'o to be caught by a phishing scam. In fact, you could live right here in Montgomery County. Facecrooks.com is warning users of the popular social media website to keep an eye out for a new phishing scam. A screen form like the one shown pops up, asking users to fill it out on behalf of Facebook Security. Often displaying as "Faćebøøĸ Sẻƈurîƚy," according to the site, it is not in fact the real security site operated by Facebook. According to Facecrooks, the message will tell you that you were "reported to have violated a policy that is considered disruptive or insulting Facebook users." Do not fill out the form. It is official. My kids have their own Facebook pages. Yes, they are only 5 and 7 now, but in all honesty, they don’t quite “own them” solo just yet. I set them up, after much request from family, not for them to “Like” random pages, Harlem Shake videos and let’s face it, lots of cute cat photos. Instead, I find it to be a place to chronicle their lives. Much like my weekly column, I find it to be a nice space to save their daily shenanigans. Facebook Tests Charging for Messages

Sending messages to people who are not your "friends" on the social network service will cost you a dollar.

Facebook is testing a new messaging feature in the U.S. where users can pay to message someone who isn’t their friend. In a news release, Facebook explains spending the $1 to send a message will ensure that your message gets sent to the receiver's Inbox, where it will generate a notification that the recipient sees, instead of the "Other" folder, where it could be hidden indefinitely unless the recipient happens to look in there. Facebook Servers Down Monday Evening

Has the apocalypse come early?

Don't panic. Don't check your computers. Don't call the authorities. Those pictures of your kids eating ice cream funny will have to wait. Facebook is down for many users, as of Monday evening. No explanation is available at this time. Huffington Post reports that Gmail was down for around 18 minutes today, and Google Drive experienced a short outage.  Many have taken to Twitter to report the outage. Instagam Taking Steps to Disable its Photos on Twitter

As of Dec. 5, Instagram users are unable to display full photos on Twitter; the company will eventually cut off all Twitter embedding.

  Instagram disabled the ability for Twitter users to display full Instagram photos, escalating tensions between the two companies, according to a New York Times Blog.  The two companies, which previously worked together to battle Facebook, have now become direct competitors when Facebook purchased Instagram. "Users are experiencing issues with viewing Instagram photos on Twitter. Issues include cropped images," Twitter said in a status update. "This is due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration, and as a result, photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience. College admissions offices are scanning students' social media accounts.

Could the posts on your teen's Facebook page hurt his or her chances to get into college? Possibly. According to a report on ABC World News , with annual admissions getting more and more competitive some schools have resorted to skimming social media pages to scope out potential students. "Most kids have no idea how important it is that their profile[s] online -- Twitter, Facebook, other social media spaces -- need to be appropriate for the admissions process," said Dean Skarlis, president of The College Advisor of New York, to ABC World News.
