Bel Canto Children's Chorus Nets American Prize

The long-running group hopes to raise its profile at home.

The Bel Canto Children’s Chorus, which practices in Trappe at the Community Music School, was recently awarded The 2011 American Prize in Choral Performance.   “It is a new prize that just started a year ago,” said Joy Hirokawa, founder and artistic director of the chorus. “Over the course of the year, they did a nice job publicizing the prize and the winners, so I thought, why not throw a hat in the ring.” Hirokawa submitted recordings of the chorus from the last two to three years for the competition. The chorus made it to the four finalists, and then went on to win.  “The actual prize is a monetary prize, although I am not sure how much,” Hirokawa said. “The recognition and publicity were more of the reason to compete.
