The second annual event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 21.
Keystone Grange No. 2 is holding its second annual blood drive at the Grange Hall at 192 W. Main Street in Trappe on April 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the Grange, someone in the U.S. needs blood ever two seconds, meaning that 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. A car accident victim could use up to 100 pints of blood, and blood transfusions are becoming more common in cancer chemotherapy. Readers interested in donating can e-mail info@keystonegrange2.org for pre-registration. In conjunction with the blood drive, the Grange will hold an open house, including tours and information on membership, benefits and upcoming events – and a special sneak peek of the upcoming Grange Fair. Refreshments will be provided by Keystone…

Matt Knoebel, 13, a Penndale Middle Schooler, is down to 0.3 percent of acute myeloid leukemia in his body. As a way to pay it forward for all the blood transfusions, his family organized an American Red Cross blood and platelet drive and National Marrow
When a mustache is drawn on his surgical mask, you know teenager Matt Knoebel was feeling all right. The Penndale Middle Schooler — who celebrated his 13th birthday on Friday — was having a spastic conversation with his friends inside a room on the grounds of Corpus Christi Church before being asked how he felt to be surrounded by people donating to save the lives of others. With his hazel eyes shining out from above the mustachioed mask, the towheaded Lansdale boy darted his look around for a bit, and then settled on one, drawn out "Good." Matt is a success story, thus far, in his battle with acute myeloid leukemia. In a matter of about 10 weeks, his leukemia has gone from 100 percent to 0.03 percent. "I do what I have to do to get better…

Officials say 'donors aren't showing up.' Many chances coming in Perkiomen Valley to help.
Yesterday, the American Red Cross held a press conference at Abington Memorial Hospital to address a blood shortage, according to a phillyburbs.com story. The story says the American Red Cross Penn-Jersey Blood Service is down 2,000 units and the organization said it expects the number of units to continue to fall due to the summer months — 18 percent of the Red Cross’ blood donations come from high schools and colleges. See the original story here. In the story, Dr. James Yuschak, director of the hospital’s trauma unit, said having blood available can mean the “difference between life or death.” According to the American Red Cross website: For more information about blood donation from the American Red Cross. In the Perkiomen Valley, the …

From the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania: The threat Hurricane Irene is posing for this weekend provides a very important reminder that we all need to be prepared for emergencies. A hurricane can cause floods, which are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground. Flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area. Stay safe: • Listen to area radio and television stations and a NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical information from the National Weather Service. • Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s …

The event benefits earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.
Students and faculty members sang, danced and performed skits for their fellow community members at Perkiomen Valley Middle School East's second annual talent show. Sponsored by the school's Builder's Club and Student Council, proceeds from the event went to the American Red Cross's disaster relief efforts in Japan, as well as other local charities. Continuing the theme of giving to those in need, a sign-up sheet was available in the lobby so volunteers could add their names to a donor list for a blood drive in May.

Moved by the news and images coming out of Japan since March 11, local Japanese American residents collected $5,600 for the American Red Cross during their fundraiser at the Montgomery Mall this past Saturday afternoon. Nobuko Lapreziosa organized the event within three days, and more than 10 parents and children stood between the Gap and Helzberg Diamonds stores on the mall's second level. Skippack Elementary third grader Genki Ozawa and his mother, Yumie, were among the volunteers. Participants signed and wrote messages on a Japanese flag, which will be sent along with the donations. "You’re powerless here," Lapreziosa said. Along with the money, "We can send a message to the Japanese people over there that everybody’s supporting them…

The Home and School Association hosts an American Red Cross blood drive.
Skippack Elementary School parents, teachers and even Principal Kimberly Boyd rolled up their sleeves to do their part for the Home and School Association's blood drive at the Skippack Township building Wednesday. Home and School President Pam Kirkman was spurred to action when the American Red Cross came to a home and school meeting to raise awareness of the area's dire need for blood donations. Kirkman and drive organizer Tammy Roop set to work, and their donor expectations doubled for what Kirkman hopes will become an annual event. She and Roop had aimed for 25 volunteers and, before the day of the drive, netted 50 signups. Due to a lack of space at the elementary school, Skippack Township partnered with the home and school association…
