Shop Small: Support Small Businesses in Your Community on Nov. 24

AmEx's third annual Small Business Saturday is coming later this month.

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. It's a day to patronize and support the locally owned small businesses in your community. Hosted by American Express and sponsored by FedEx, Clear Channel and many other corporate supporters, public officials and advocacy groups, the third annual Small Business Saturday will be held Nov. 24, to help small businesses generate exposure and, well, business during the biggest shopping season of the year. Supporting these businesses invigorates the economy and the community. Last year, more than 100 million people pledged to "Shop Small," by visiting brick-and-mortar shops in their neighborhoods, and American Express estimates this year's turnout will be even greater. …

American Express to Refund $85 Million to Customers

Three subsidiaries of the company have been required by federal regulators to return money to customers and to pay $27.5 million in fines.

Three American Express subsidiaries are refunding  250,000 customers roughly $85 million, plus paying $27.5 million in fines, for illegal card practices after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced enforcement action, according to CBS Local. According to CFPB, enforcement action was announced after a federal investigation found that American Express violated consumer protection laws at every step of customer experience, including: Deceptive Practices: American Express Centurion Bank led "Blue Sky" program consumers to believe they would receive $300. Violated the Credit CARD Act: American Express Centurion Bank and American Express Bank, FSB billed late fees on certain cards based on a percentage that violated the act. …
