Pretend trip back in time took place Friday, May 18
Perkiomen Valley School District contributed to the following information: On a gorgeous Friday morning, South Elementary held its Colonial Fair. The fair is a 22-year-old tradition that is held every year in front of the school. Roughly 16 presenters were there to teach the children about life in colonial times. The students learned about the colonial life in their classrooms so this is a perfect application of their knowledge. Different stations were set up such as dancing, ice-cream making, quilting, games, and other fun crafts. Members of the school and local community pulled through and made it a great day for the students.

Players upset the coach did not start all seniors during senior night
A YouTube video posted May 9 shows members of the Perkiomen Valley High School baseball team leaving the field to the cheers of some spectators. According to the video's description, the walk-off occurred because the "coach did not start all seniors" on Senior Night. Senior Night does not traditionally require all seniors to start a game in the PV School District. While the game against Pope John Paul II High School did resume that night, May 9, the players who walked off the field "declined to rejoin the team and did not play the final two games (of the season)," according to an e-mail from the Perkiomen Valley School District. "We are disappointed that the students chose to take this action and declined to rejoin the team after the …

An additional board member will sit on the finance and policy committees, respectively.
In two separate votes, the Perkiomen Valley School Board approved adding an additional board seat (from three to four) to the finance and policy committees and to include a public comments section during the committee meetings. The additional board member was approved in a 6-2 vote, and the public comments portion was approved by a unanimous vote from the present board members. Capt. Sam Schweigert was absent. At the discussion's onset, board President Lynn Bigelow asked Solicitor Brian Subers what the rules were for increasing board representation to four or five members on a committee. Subers replied that five board members creates a quorum, allowing them to vote on issues and mandating a public comments section. The established rules …

Final approval due in June
The time for "easy" cuts is over, noted Perkiomen Valley School District Superintendent Dr. Clifford Rogers during Monday night's school board meeting. Although the board approved a proposed final budget on May 7 in order to adhere to the Act I timeline, members are still grappling with how to close a $921,000 gap. Items suggested for cutting expenses come from the "yellow" or "shared pain" list that emerged from 2011's Town Hall meeting where district residents evaluated ways to reduce costs or raise revenue in order to make up for the budget shortfall. Board member Randy Bennett broke down the list into three sections, noting that the measures consist of a wage freeze, "soft" savings (meaning the value isn't definite) and eliminating …

Jon Ward to gain research experience in astrophysics lab
With classes having wrapped up for the semester, Ursinus College students might have waves on their mind as summer approaches. Physics major and basketball player Jon Ward is one of them, but the waves he's thinking about are bit different, according to a CBS report. Ward will spend 10 weeks in an astrophysics lab in Paris studying gravitational waves as he fulfills his Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU), the report states. Gravitational waves are "(things) that come out of big astrophysical events such as supernova, black hole, star collapses, stuff like that," Ward is quoted as saying. The report also quotes Coach Kevin Small, who says Ward “represents the ideal of both Ursinus College and also Division III athletics. The …

Family, friends and faculty recognize the thousands of young adults as they ready themselves for life's next chapter
By Hillary Anderson There was not a cloud in the sky when the temperate Collegeville climate welcomed thousands of people to the front lawn of Ursinus College’s campus on Friday morning. While the enormous white tent provided shade for more than 3,000 people, cheerfully dressed friends and family of Ursinus’ Class of 2012 also filled both sides of the tent and watched intently as nearly 450 hardworking graduates took their triumphant strides across the stage and received their coveted diplomas. Those ribboned rolls of paper were the culmination of four years of dedication and hard work for all and obviously stood as the focus of the day, but speakers and leaders also spent the morning shedding light on all the wonderful gifts the Ursinus …
