PSU Coach Search: Franklin, Munchak Next To Be Considered

Miami coach Al Golden was interviewed by the Nittany Lions Saturday, but said Sunday that he will not be leaving.

Penn State’s search for a new football coach continues.

A number of names have come up since Bill O’Brien confirmed last week that he was leaving the Nittany Lions for the Houston Texans. O’Brien spent two seasons at Penn State.

The Nittany Lions on Saturday interviewed Al Golden, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Golden, head coach at the University of Miami and former Temple University head coach, played for Penn State and at one time was an assistant coach. He was considered by many outsiders to be a top contender for the job.

Golden took himself out of the running on Sunday, however, posting a statement saying, “I am not a candidate for another position.”

ESPN is reporting that the Penn State search committee is now considering Mike Munchak, recently fired by the Tennesse Titans, and Vanderbilt University head coach James Franklin. Munchak played for Penn State in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Inquirer said

Both Munchak and Franklin currently are based in Nashville. It was unclear when their interviews with the search committee would take place.
