Superior Credit Union Branch Opens in PVHS

The following is a press release from the Perkiomen Valley School District:

Perkiomen Valley High School and Superior Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of a new credit union branch located inside the high school on Nov. 29. The branch will be used as an educational tool to teach students about the basic principles and practices of the financial services industry, as well as educate students about financial literacy.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Dr. Clifford Rogers, Superintendent; Cyndi Lewis, High School Principal; Matt Jones, CEO of Superior Credit Union; Joe Gimble, Vice President of Operations for Superior Credit Union; Carlyn Kish, Membership Champ for Superior Credit Union; Jim Bozzini, Secretary to the Superior Credit Union Board of Directors; Randy Bennett, Perkiomen Valley School District School Board member; Dan Pennebacker, a high school teacher who is serving as liaison to the credit union; and students who are involved in the branch’s operations.

Perkiomen Valley High School students Nate Balog (ninth grade), Ryan DiGiovanni (10th grade) and Andrew Schuler (12th grade) – have been hired to oversee branch operations, which can include everything from identifying problems and opportunities to developing marketing strategies, and reporting to Superior Credit Union’s Board of Directors. Superior Credit Union representatives are also working directly with teachers twice a month to incorporate financial literacy lessons into Accounting I and Personal Finance classes, to teach students about the importance of saving money, balancing a checking account, having a good credit score, and more.

The branch itself is open twice a week during lunch periods, and while students have the ability to open checking or savings accounts, participation is not mandatory. The branch is not open to the general public.

Superior Credit Union was founded in 1956 by the employees of Superior Tube Company, and has since opened its membership to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Montgomery County.  Superior Credit Union’s Board of Directors and staff strongly believe in the financial education of our youth.  It is a goal of the credit union to help prepare students to become wise, financial consumers as they enter the workforce, or head off to college.  Through this new partnership, Superior Credit Union’s mission is to help the students better understand the financial world and how their everyday decisions can impact their financial lives.
