Using your Energy Efficiently

There are times in life when we feel lethargic, heavy, and down. These times typically result from us working too hard, or in other words, not using our energy efficiently. You may find yourself over-sleeping, over-eating, and having trouble getting yourself back on track. Luckily, there are changes we can make in our awareness that help us to harness our energy and re-distribute it so that we can return to a balanced state of being!

As with many changes in lifestyle, it is important to begin with baby steps. Changing a habituated cycle of living is not the easiest thing to do; so you have to start right where you are and grow your awareness of where your energy is currently being distributed in and around you before you act to make a change.

Ask yourself the following question: “Where am I distributing energy in my mind and body?”

To answer this question, you may draw your awareness first to the mind. What do you typically think about? Are you complaining? Are you in a constant state of “wanting?” Are you attaching your happiness to object outside of your circumstances?

Next, draw your awareness to your emotions. What are you consistently feeling? Do you feel tired and heavy? How about excited for a short time before you crash? Perhaps you feel lazy, stubborn, or apathetic.

Now, to the body. Where is your energy being directed? Are you sleeping or sitting around too often, allowing stale, built up energy to rest with no outlet or form of expression? Are you constantly repeating the same thing every day to such an extent that your body is on auto-pilot?

Once you understand where the energy within you is being directed, you can consciously begin to re-direct it into places that will benefit you. A simple look into science reveals that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but that it is always moving. The energy in you IS you. All of the energy you will ever need is already there for you! You just have to give it direction.

Instead of complaining, re-direct your focus (energy) on what you want. Choose to enjoy being in your own presence. When you are feeling tired, lazy, and stubborn, shift the flow of your energy. Know that energy is always moving and your laziness is just an old habit. Remind yourself that all the energy you need exists for you right now, in this moment. When your body feels tired or worn out, move! Do some jumping jacks or go for a brisk walk. This action changes the habitual flow of energy in your body into a flow which will benefit you.

Intend energy to work for you- change your relationship with the areas to which it is flowing. You will soon begin to understand how to use your consciousness to direct, maintain, and use your energy efficiently in life.
