Poll: Is Philly to NYC in 37 Minutes Worth $151B?

Amtrak's plan for the Northeast Corridor could take you from Philadelphia to New York in 37 minutes. Is it worth the project's $151 billion price tag?

Amtrak’s latest East Coast high-speed train plan could get you from Philadelphia to New York in 37 minutes, according to Philly.com.

The faster service is part of a major plan, according to Philly.com, that would

  • Create 40,000 construction jobs a year for 25 years
  • Create 22,000 new permanent jobs
  • Be completed in phases, ending in 2040
  • Accommodate trains traveling 220 mph
  • Expand Market East station in Philadelphia
  • Send bullet trains through tunnels under Philadelphia
  • Cost $151 billion

What do you think? Is this worth it the money? Would you ever have reason to ride that train?

Not to me. It may be worth it to millionaires who can pay for it. But of course they won't. They will get educated white liberals and the poor to vote for it because they know the middle class will pay for it - and as a bonus it will create a few thousand union jobs and another Democrat party consituency. Cynical? Gee, why would I be cynical.

How about Septa create high speed lines for the thousands of passengers that go to the city of Philadelphia everyday? You will be lucky to have a few hundred going to NYC. Who makes these decisions? The tracks that Amtrak uses from Harrisburg to Phila are absolutely shameful. The ties are from the 60's and are in no way safe. How about Amtrak fix all of those as well as upgrade the power lines so all of the passengers that rely on the trains in/out of the city dont have to waste hours of their lives due to 'SIGNAL PROBLEMS'. Fixing all of these issues will create jobs too. Get real people.

Making the commute to NYC faster affects relatively few people. It is more important the improve the commute within the state and providing viable alternatives to automobile commutes via the Expressway, the Blue Route and I-95. Get our commuter trains working again so we can get to work!

The total cost of this government boondoggle will at least triple what they say it will be ant the travel time to NYC will be at least double what they claim and the cost of upkeep on the new trains and tracks will fall on the taxpayer. Stop it now

Wait. Amtrak already runs a massive deficit. Is there really any reason to make it larger? This is a hideously awful idea!
