Though no longer celebrated as a day off from school and work, today marks the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States.
Lincoln was born 204 years ago on a farm in Kentucky, where he had to struggle to learn, and to make a living, before becoming President in 1861.
While he delivered one of the best-known presidential speeches, the Gettysburg Address, only two hours away from our area, Lincoln also a has vast number of quotes attributed to him.
In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are a few:
“And in the end it is not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.”
“Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow. The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the real thing.”
"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
“It is true that you may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.”
“People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality.”
“The Lord prefers common-looking people. That is why he made so many of them”
