Spring-Ford Teen Admits to DUI in Crash that Killed Limerick Jogger

Justin Matthew Jackson, 19, admitted that he was driving under the influence when he struck and killed Merinda R. Thompson, of Royersford.

A Lower Pottsgrove teenager admitted to driving under the influence when he caused a fatal crash that struck a jogger along North Lewis Road in Limerick in March.

Justin Matthew Jackson, 19, of Walnut Ridge Estates, will spend at least three years in jail after pleading Monday to homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of a controlled substance, homicide by vehicle, and other charges in connection with the March 4 crash that killed Royersford jogger Merinda Thompson.

Homicide while DUI carries a mandatory sentence of three years; Jackson is facing six to 12 years in prison, including his other charges.

“He admitted to this tragedy. Today was a small first step towards achieving justice for the victim and her family,” Assistant District Attorney Jason Whalley on Monday, according to the Pottstown Mercury. “He admitted that his reckless actions caused the death of Thompson. A wonderful woman is dead for absolutely no reason and it’s because of the irresponsible actions of the defendant.”

According to court records, Jackson was traveling eastbound on North Lewis Road around 2:45 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and traveled across the southbound lane, striking Thompson, who was jogging against traffic on the Southbound side of the road.

Thompson, a mother of two children, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jackson’s car was searched, and a glass pipe and marijuana was found on his vehicle; Jackson was also accused of texting while driving just prior to the crash.

In June, Jackson pleaded not guilty to the charges against him; in August, he began serving jail time while awaiting trial.

“He’s incredibly remorseful and saddened by the tragedy that he brought on this young lady’s life,” said defense attorney Martin Mullaney.

Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven T. O’Neill deferred sentencing until a background report could be completed.
