AWOL Soldier Found Dead After Lower Pottsgrove Standoff

An AWOL National Guardsman was in a six-hour standoff with local law enforcement that evacuated local schools, according to reports.


Pottsgrove High School was evacuated and other schools were placed on lockdown around noon on Wednesday after a standoff between an AWOL National Guard member and local law enforcement in Lower Pottsgrove; the shooter is now dead.

The incident began when police were called to the 1300 block of Lynn Drive in Lower Pottsgrove around noon on Wednesday for a "well-being" check; a shot was heard upon arrival, but it was unclear if shots were directed at police, according to 6abc.com.

MontcoAlerts reported that officials said that National Guardsman was found dead in the home; no foul play is suspected.

Four Pottsgrove school buildings were on lock down and no students were injured, according to myfoxphilly.com

According to The Reporter, students at the high school for summer activities were evacuated from the scene on busses; students from the high school were transported to the middle school and were picked up by parents.

The Pottsgrove School District announced at 2:50 p.m. that students at Lower Pottsgrove Elementary School could be picked up by parents or would be transported home by the district.
