A 28-year-old Phoenixville woman is facing charges of theft by deception, receiving stolen property and tampering with records, among others, after allegedly stealing nearly $10,000 from her employee, Giant Food Store in Limerick, by completing fraudulent transactions involving gift cards and after-sale coupons, according to the Limerick Township Police Department.

Giant Food Store, located on South Township Line Road in Limerick, contacted Limerick police on Thursday regarding theft of $9,814.33 at the store, allegedly by Nicole Silver.

Upon investigation, police reportedly found that Silver had been stealing from the store since Feb. 2 by abusing after-sale coupons, a coupon presented to the store by a customer after an item was purchased, and returns of consortium gift cards—third-party gift cards such as MasterCard or Visa.

It is against Giant police to refund a gift card without a manager’s approval; according to police, Silver processed 47 return transactions regarding the gift cards since Feb. 28, though no customers were present at the time. Silver moved to various cash registers throughout the store to complete, police said.

Over seven months, Silver allegedly returned gift cards ranging from $20 to $500, totaling $9,586.33, police said.

Between Aug. 2 and Aug. 12, Silver allegedly stole $228.25 by cashing in after-sale coupons with no customer present at her register. The alleged after-sale coupon thefts range from $10 to $62.64, police said.

Unable to post $5,000 bail, Silver was sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

With charges like these, I always wonder how far the alleged perpetrator would go in life if he/she had only applied such ingenuity, cleverness and efforts to a legal way to make money.
