LONGHORNS BATTLE FOR WEEK 1 VICTORY!!

COLLEGEVILLE, PA: 8/31/13: GAME OF THE WEEK: On a sun-drenched day at John T. Walsh Memorial Field in Collegeville, the 70 pound Longhorns won their season opener by a score of 20-18 over the visiting Penndel Wildcats.  Scotland Simpson got the scoring started with a 70 yard touchdown run on the Longhorns' first play from scrimmage.  After the Longhorns defense,  led by Max Lebisky and Billy Dawson, stymied the Wildcats, Avery Salvi took a pitch, and after making one defender miss, sprinted for a long touchdown run to make the score 13-0.  The Wildcats proved that they were not done by any stretch, and drove the ball in for a score before halftime making it a 13-6 game.

The Longhorns offense was clicking again in the second half behind the stout blocking of Declan Gintz, Jack Tarloski and Tyler Berkheiser.  Jack Lockrey broke a tackle and scored on a 43 yard scamper.  Once again, the Wildcats answered with a touchdown of their own closing the gap to 20-12.
The Wildats scored again in the fourth quarter to make the game a nail biter at 20-18.  After a long drive by the Longhorns stalled deep in Wildcats' territory, the Wildcats took over on downs with only 19 seconds to play.  A trick play sprung free the Wildcats' running back for a long run, however, Aaron Crothers tracked him down for the game saving tackle before reaching the endzone.  Final score Longhorns 20-18! The Longhorns would like to thank Jay Reed of the Trappe Tavern for being the honorary official and doing the coin toss to kickoff our 51st season!

The Longhorns' teams went 8-1 in Week 1 of their regular season.  All 9 football teams play at home this weekend starting with two games Friday night.  Mike Santilo, Head Coach of Pope John Paull II High School football team, with several current PJP players, will be the honorary officials for the coin toss at Friday's 6:30 p.m. game.  I hope to see the sidelines packed with fans wearing silver and black to see the Longhorns take on the mighty Lansdale Cannoneers (105's) and the Lenape Valley Indians (120's).
