Getting to Know Cut Flowers - Daisy Chrysanthemums

The most common type of daisy used in wedding work is the chrysanthemum daisy because it holds up so well.  Shasta daisies, often grown in gardens, does not retain water and can easily wilt.  So most florists stick with the "tried and true" daisy mum.

White petals with a yellow center is certainly the most popular daisy, but the daisy mum also comes in a seasonal variety of colors.  In the Spring you'll also find yellow, pink, and lavender daisy mums. In the Fall daisies appear in red, orange, and golden yellow daisies.  I love the purple and the burgundy bi-colored daisies available in the Fall.  Within each color family are several different types of daisies. Some have double the number of petals. Some have more greenish centers like my favorite white daisy - the Atlantis.

Daisies have a vase life of almost two weeks.  They are popular not only as a cut flower, but are also available as a flowering plant.  Since the meaning of daisies is innocence,  purity, and simplicity,  this beloved flower was used a lot for Colonial weddings.  It has even been depicted in Medieval paintings.
