Getting to Know Cut Flowers - Campanula

Campanula is a member of the bellflower family. It's name originates from the Latin word campan - which means bell.  And the florets do indeed look like bells.  It's available in clustered florets or on spikelike  stems.  It's vase life is limited to about 5 days.

It's not a flower that I've used much in design work.  It's not tall enough  for church flowers,  but taller than most flowers I use for centerpieces.  It's also not quite strong enough to stand on it's own.  Campanula is a garden flowers available only from May through August.   It's bluish-purple to purple color also limits its use within its narrow time frame of availability.  When gardeners grow it, they may be able find it in white or pink, but the bluish/purple and purple colors are most prevalent and available to florists.  They are also the most hardy.

Campanula is just right for garden themed summer weddings worked in among other garden flowers.  It's a beautiful, uniquely shaped flower that should be more popular than it is.
