Getting to Know Cut Flowers - Bachelor's Button

One of the few blue flowers available for design work are Bachelor's Buttons also known as Centaurea or Cornflower.  They are actually a part of the sunflower family.  In Greek mythology, Centaur is said to have used cornflower medicinally.  The flowers have small thistle-like heads and will last anywhere from 5 to 7 days.  When you bring a bunch of Bachelor's Buttons home, it is helpful to wrap the bunch in newspaper held with rubber bands to keep the stems as straight as possible while the stems are drinking water.  While less common, Bachelor's Buttons also come in white, yellow, and pink and are available in February through September.
