Getting to Know Cut Flowers: Anthurium
It seems to me that Anthurium is a flower that brides either love or hate because it is so distinctive and very showy. The name comes from the Greek words anthos (flower) and oura (tail). It is also known as flamingo flower, painted tongue, and painter's palette. It comes in a variety of colors - the most well known being red. But it also comes in pink, white, green, rust, and some bicolors. Anthurium consists of a shiny, colorful leaf called a spathe with a spandix (tongue/tail) that is normally yellow. They are a fairly long lasting flower - sometimes up to 2 weeks. But they also bruise fairly easily so they should be handled carefully. I love them for wedding work because they spathe reminds me of a heart. And they are a perfect addition to tropical flowers. They are available all year round.
