Customize Your Granola Bar Experience

You might be surprised how simple and healthy DIY granola bars can be!

Granola bars are healthy, right? With their oats and their nuts and their whole grains, how can you go wrong?

Believe it or not, some contain a lot of sodium and unnecessary sweeteners. And they come with a hefty price tag! $3.49 for six bars?

You know where I'm going with this. Control the nutritional value and keep the cost down by making your own granola bars. It's so much easier than you're probably imagining, it's way cheaper than buying storebought granola bars, and I bet you already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. And making your own granola lets you totally customize your snack experience. Don't like raisins? Leave them out. Are you a nut for nuts? Throw in some walnuts and peanuts in a recipe that only calls for almonds.

Try some of the granola bar recipes below. After the bars are cooled and cut, store them in an airtight container or a sealed storage bag. They'll keep for a few weeks. Or throw half the batch in the freezer, and defrost them when the first half is gone (assuming they have time to freeze before the first batch disappears!).

Healthy Granola-Energy Bars - These bars are loaded with antioxidants and energy-boosting ingredients like nuts and coconut oil, and they're sweetened with honey and brown sugar.

Nutella Granola Bars - I'd eat anchovies if they were dipped in Nutella. Cocoa and hazelnut and delicious, it's actually relatively healthy because it's made with skim milk, and without artificial colors or preservatives. To give this bar some tasty texture, use crisp rice cereal, coconut flakes and chopped pecans.

Chocolate Chip Granola Bites - What's more fun than granola bars? Granola bites! You can make this, or just about any other granola bar recipe in muffin cups. Scoop them into muffin cups - this blogger uses silicone muffin cups - and mound and press the granola. Bake, then let cool completely to set.

No-Bake Granola Bars - These bars take three minutes. Need I say more? Melt butter. Dissolve sugar. Add vanilla. Mix in oats, crisp rice cereal. Press into pan, sprinkle with chocolate chips and cool for an hour. Bam! Homemade granola bars!

Autumn Brittle - Ok, admittedly these are not granola bars. But they're loaded with nuts, and they just look so delicious I had to include them. And technically, they have granola in them.
