Stress During the Holiday Season

Dr. Kyle from Flow Chiropractic & Wellness gives facts and tips on dealing with stress during the holidays and how to take care of yourself

It’s that time of year! I know, I can’t believe it either. When the holiday season rolls around each year, our schedules undoubtedly get just a little bit more hectic.

Whether it is finding the time to get all your grocery shopping finished to cook that turkey for 20 people, or getting the house spic and span, putting up lights and decorations, or making your travel plans, our plates become overflowing with extra tasks to get done at the last minute.

However, with all these extra activities to accomplish, it can become overwhelming. This can add stress on top of stress, and this can take a toll on your body. You may sleep less or the quality of sleep can decline. Your energy may be drained throughout the day. You may not feel well because you don’t give yourself a chance to relax.

During these times of stress, your body goes into survival mode. During extended times of stress, your body reacts as it would if it were being chased by an animal hunting you (even though it might feel like that anyway)

When this happens, your body wants to put more energy in certain places and away from others. It tells itself that it better conserve food because it doesn’t know when its next meal may be. So, it slows down the digestive process, which over time can lead to stomach problems and other digestive issues. It increases the heart rate and blood pressure. It opens up your breathing pathways in the lungs, and decreases hydration to the eyes. Because of the constant stimulation, you have trouble sleeping.

This holiday season, take a step back and try to slow down. Make a list of your tasks to do that day, but make it realistic. Don’t write down everything you have to get done in the next week on one piece of paper. Accomplish the biggest item first, and each one after will feel much easier.

Take time for yourself to close your eyes, relax, and just breathe. Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help or say no. It is a time to celebrate with friends and family, and it should be enjoyable the entire time!
