Make Your Bed

Developing one small habit can make you happier!

I’ve always felt that making the bed was a great way to begin the day. I learned this from my mother. From early on, she was a believer in using free labor. I think I was about 4 when she introduced the bed-making concept to me - along with washing the dinner dishes. I don’t think she cared about how perfectly any of it was done. She was a teacher. She knew instinctively that accomplishing small tasks, even as a child, would make me feel good about myself. I don’t remember being thrilled about this at first. But it became clear that there was no way around it. And it made her happy that I was helping. I loved it when she said, “Great job -you’re such a good helper!”

From a Feng Shui standpoint, the bedroom is a very important spot. It should be a sanctuary where you can recharge yourself and your relationships. For any children in your life, it should be a place without chaos. They need to recharge as well. If your bedroom is cluttered, and if clearing the clutter seems too much to tackle, just start by making your bed. This sets up your intention of starting the day with one of life’s little things accomplished. On some days, it might be the only thing that gets finished, but that’s okay. It’s a start. A made bed also welcomes us back to rest. Remember, it’s the little things that add up to a balanced, happy life.

From an interior design standpoint, your bedroom can add so much to your quality of life. Wonderful color combinations, pillows, soft carpets, beautiful sheets, and soft lighting all contribute to your ability to rest and recharge.

Even if you’ve made some great choices, though, you won’t get to experience them if your bedroom is a mess. So just start with making your bed! For me it says that each day is a new beginning.

Teaching your kids to make their beds will get them off to a great start, but be prepared for some push-back. Stay the course. You’re giving them a small gift of independence and a taste of how the little things can create balance and happiness in life!
