Nuke Officials Knew Of Fault Upon Licensing Plant

Three faults were documented when the Limerick nuclear plant was planned more than 30 years ago.

Local residents last month questioned whether the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission knew of local faults when the Limerick Generating Station was planned for construction.  "The short answer is, 'yes,'" said Diane Screnci, NRC senior public affairs officer.  Folks at a meeting in Limerick Township last month showed NRC officials a document which referred to "the Sanatoga fault" and asked whether the NRC was aware of its proximity to the Limerick site prior to initial licensing.  The NRC hosted the meeting -- which included workers from the commission and Exelon -- to discuss with the public an annual safety performance assessment of Exelon's Limerick nuclear power plant.  At that time, members of The Alliance For A Clean Environment …

Applebee's Displays Our Community's All-Stars

Your child may be in the spotlight at the Royersford Applebee's.

Families or individuals in the community that frequent the Applebee's restaurant on Buckwalter Road in Royersford may have seen some local stars gracing the walls. Athletes from Spring-Ford High School, Perkiomen Valley High School and Pope John Paul II High School are pictured on the special "local walls" that Applebee's designated. General Manager of the Royersford branch Todd Naiko said these walls have been dedicated for almost two years now. "It's part of our brand and it's been part of our brand for a really long time," he said. "We switched over the core of the restaurant two years this summer. When we redid the wallpaper and stained glass and bar top and things like that, we also wanted to create something local. So we did the …

Collegeville Farmers Market Returns

Area residents -- and eventually the sun -- come out for the second annual opening

Some familiar businesses -- including Joe Paws, Ridge Valley Farm and Pure Scents Candle Company -- returned for Collegeville Farmers Market's opening day, but there were new faces as well among the more than 20 stalls that set up shop Saturday, May 5. In addition to shopping from local vendors, visitors could also listen to live music from Kendal Conrad and stop by the children's play area. The Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 460 E. Main St., Collegeville.

Love the candles, wonderful natural scents and everyone I gift them to loves them. Purchased some great varieties of lettuce and ramps and radishes and delicious scones, but too late for those scrumptious cinnamon buns from St. Peter's Bakery. I attended all last season and was never disappointed with the variety of local goods.   more ›

The Rev. Robert Povish Removed from Ministry

Archbishop Charles Chaput's press conference addressed eight of 27 cases of priest suspensions

The Rev. Robert W. Povish, a former in-residence priest at St. Eleanor's Parish in Collegeville, is one of five priests removed from ministry, according to a press conference held by Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput on Friday afternoon, May 4. Povish was among 27 priests suspended following a February 2011 grand jury report that charged the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had allowed several priests to remain in active ministry despite what the grand jury deemed credible allegations of abuse or misconduct. Those on leave face accusations of inappropriate behavior or boundary issues with minors, or of more serious abuse, according to a March 2011 interview with archdiocesan Director of Communications Donna Farrell. Chaput said he would …

The real problem is that the Church hides these monsters in eccliastical living situations, which is basically the Catholic priest version of prison, they meet every hour for count or prayer as they call it. How about releasing these monsters into a real old fashioned American prison and let them taste the kind of abuse they have given.   more ›

Corbett Cuts Said to Threaten Montco Economy

Shapiro, Richards join business and non-profit leaders in call to restore health and human services funding to state budget.

Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards joined State Representative Matt Bradford (D-70th) and non-profit and business representatives on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown on Thursday to denounce cuts to health and human services in the proposed Pennsylvania state budget for 2012-13. Referencing the recent controversy over Governor Tom Corbett's statement that Pennsylvania women who didn't want to see a pre-abortion ultrasound should "close their eyes," Shapiro claimed that Corbett had "closed his eyes" to the plight of "the most vulnerable [people] in Pennsylvania." "We're here to say to Governor Corbett and our friends in the legislature, open your eyes to the reality of what a 20 …

I do agree J. H. providers are to blame as well. There is abuse in the system. However, there are many who need this help and also many who enjoy providing this help, as I work in the mental health/behavioral health and disabled field, both child and adult. Cutting funding drastically to these programs is a mistake as it will cut very necessary services to those in great need and also cause …   more ›

Applications still being accepted for current, former PVSD students for summer employment

Donation Jar Stolen From Collegeville Rita's

The store's owner estimates that about $150 was in the jar.

A jar containing an estimated $150 in donations to support educational programs for children with autism was stolen from the Rita's Water Ice in Collegeville on April 21, the store's owner said Saturday. Bev McNutt, who owns the Collegeville Rita's and three other Rita's locations in the area, believes the large plastic jar for the store's annual "Ice for Autism" charity drive was stolen from the external counter of the store after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, when customer activity had slowed. "I think it happened at night when things slowed down. Maybe [the employees] looked away for a second," McNutt said. McNutt said the jar was taken inside and, with the exception of coins, emptied at the end of each day. She estimates the jar was about one…
