Ursinus Students Urged to Evacuate by Sunday

Students are encouraged to leave by noon on Sunday due to impending weather; all events are cancelled Sunday through Tuesday.

Ursinus President Bobby Fong sent a message to all students cancelling classes and activities Sunday through Tuesday of next week due to the approaching storm, and urging all students to evacuate the campus by Noon on Sunday.

"Students who can safely leave campus are encouraged to do so," Fong said in the message, citing a high probability of power outages predicted as a result of the impending storm. "We strongly urge students to leave campus by noon Sunday."

There seems to be no impact on Homecoming weekend, which ran Friday and Saturday of the weekend; the last event scheduled for the weekend is a girls' soccer game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Instructors are encouraged to find alternative assignments to make up for lost class time, and only employees whose presence on campus is essential should consider coming to work, according to Fong.

Daily updates will be posted on the college's website, and Fong asks people not to call Campus Safety or 9-1-1 for weather updates, as the lines must be clear for emergencies.

During Hurricane Irene last year, there were no class cancellations.

I'm trying to discover the lick of sense in this action and having a very difficult time of it. Has anyone told the Ursinus administration that the college is 200 feet above sea level and 40 or more miles inland from Philadelphia, putting aside the fact that most college buildings are probably built to more rigorous wind resistance standards than most homes?

And what about all the residents of Collegeville; where should they evacuate to? And where should the students go; out of state would be good, but airlines have cancelled flights. Not sure this makes sense.
