Nutter, Pa. Dems Blast Romney Before Friday Visit

The Philadelphia mayor spoke out against GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney who will visit the Union League in Philadelphia and Valley Forge Military Academy in Radnor.

One day before GOP presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney visits the Union League and Valley Forge Military Academy, Pennsylvania Democrats spoke out about his visit.

In a press call Thursday, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Jim Burn criticized the former Massachusetts governor's tax plan and said Romney's out of touch with the common Pennsylvanian.

"I think what we're all wondering is, will he double down on the 47% comment?" Burn said, referring to Romney's remarks at a Florida fundraiser where the candidate discussed citizens who may not vote for him. "It's unacceptable for a candidate for president to dismiss folks as not worth pursuing."

The Democrats hammered the "47% comment," and said the "victims" Romney referred to as non-taxpayers include senior citizens, military personnel and college students.

"To say our nation's college students are victims of accepting handouts can't be further from the truth," Nutter said. "Either Gov. Romney is insulting or out of touch."

Burn said Romney's tax plan "confirms what we all expected — the tax plan is for millionaires and billionaires like himself... sounds like Mr. Romney's tax plan is looking out for one person, Mr. Romney."

While Democrats, like those on the call, have criticized Romney's tax plan, conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation say that certain analysis made inaccurate assumptions that would favor an argument in which Romney only favors the rich.

Romney's appearance in Wayne and Philadelphia Friday comes on the heels of different polling results. An internal Republican poll has Romney closing the gap in Pennsylvania behind President Obama, while separate Qunnipiac and Franklin & Marshall polls show the incumbent widening his lead.

When asked if Romney's speech on Friday meant the candidate felt Pennsylvania was back in play, Nutter refused to speculate as to the GOP's strategy.

"Pennsylvania is great state and if you're running for president, then you should go everywhere," he said.

Although the VFMA visit is a public rally, KYW Philadelphia said the Union League event is for donors and the campaign expects to raise $3 to $4 million.

Nutter said that round-table event is indicative of Romney's attitude toward the commonwealth and credited Obama for reaching more common voters.

"We are fortunate that we have a president who does get it... President Obama is looking out for all Americans, not just the few," he said.

Nutter should keep his mouth shut and worry about the mess he has in Philadelphia. With all the criminals running wild I'm amazed people go to Philly to do buisness, soon to be Camden.

Nutter is right. Romney is always talking about tax's cause he is trying to get out of paying his back taxes. Romney needs to go back in his white suburban blue colar life. We need no one else trying to screw up our already world.

Care to back up your claim of back taxes? You can't. Even the NY Times has debunked that as false.

Romney hasn't spent us into oblivion with 5 trillion added to our debt. Romney hasn't failed to get the economy going. Romney hasn't doubled the amount of people on food stamps. Romney has nothing to do with "Taxagedden" coming on January 1st.

Who is Nutter to criticize anyone? He is the Mayor of a city that through decades of Democratic leadership has steadily declined into the mess it is now.

Having Nutter and the dems out there attacking Romney proves the polls are skewed. If Obama's widening lead in PA to double digits was true, these guys would not be out there. Don't buy into these polls, PA! Get out and vote. No incumbent has ever surged in polls as the economy tanks and gas prices double since taking office.

This is what a campaign running with no record looks like. Attack your opponent and ignore the last 3.5 years of failure.

The laugher is that Obama says a "bi-partisan" group determined that Romney's plan is bad. Bi-partisan meaning a group of former Obama officials and other Democrats. All they can do is twist and spin- and never offer specifics and of course never offer their own plan but blast any other. The debate will be fun watching Romney call out Obama on lie after lie.

Nutter attacks Romney's 47% comment made at a private fundraiser, but conveniently overlooks Obama's redistribution rant made to college students. Typical liberal hypocrisy. A President with a record of failure as blatant as Obama's must resort to making outrageous claims that his opponent is a tax cheat and was responsible for a woman's death caused by cancer. This President and his surrogates (Nutter and others) show that they really have no shame in how low they can go in discrediting their opponents. Meanwhile, Obama can yuck it up on talk shows, ignore Isreali PM Netanyahu's request for a meeting and otherwise ignore the stagnant economy, cover up the obvious terror attack in Libya and ignore the stagnant economy. Rome burns while our President fiddles.

The "redistribution rant" was taken out of context and made 18 years ago. Romney's 47% comment was made THIS YEAR and was said to a group of people he didn't think was videotaping anything. You tell me which is valid.

I thought when Nutter was elected the first time, he might be a Rendel. But alas, he is a hack that wants to be in the next (not gonna happen) Obama Administration. What department?? The Peter Principle says the Dept. of Education, cause the Philly schools are so great.

@Marc: The "You didn't build that was also taken out of context. It wasn't, I listened to the whole speech. When Dems really say what's on their mind, it's taken out of context. The only reason the "you didn't build it" statement has been swallowed by the Obama campaign, is that it was rejected even by Democrats. He is a redistributer. Eupemistically calling taxes and confiscation, investment. If it walks like a duck........The 47% was a misstatement, not untrue though. It shows we need to change the tax laws so that more have skin in the game. We can also argue whether capital gains taxes should be revised as well, but to villify a person because he legally takes advantage of the tax laws blames the messanger, not the message.

Here's the transcript of the parts of the speech in question:
QUOTE
There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.”
UNQUOTE

Sounds very straight-forward to me. "If you have reached success, it's pretty damn certain you didn't reach it on your own. SOMEONE helped you along the way."

And I agree with that. You don't?

Marc....this year Obama told Medeyev to "tell Vladimier to wait until after the election when I have more flexibility." He also had enough time this week to visit the View while in NYC but couldn't find the time to connect with Netenayhu....while the Mideast is a tinder box. So, Obama, while he didn't think anyone was listening, told the Russian despots to chill until after the election. That, my friend, is valid.

I think his honesty with Medvedev (that's how you spell it) is refreshing. A lot better than the posturing you hear when one diplomat talks to another about stuff they clearly don't agree on.

As for the View, I agree with you that he should have been putting the time in politically with Netenyahu rather than getting face time on TV. Especially on a vapid show like the View (bleh!). So maybe -- JUST maybe -- that's why Obama and Netenyahu spoke today over the phone (as reported in many media outlets on the right AND left) and seemed to have made not only a connection on shared beliefs about the Iran situation but also put to rest an issues from the recent snubbing. Let's be honest -- these two never really got along.

I forget, is Netenyahu/Israel one of the countries that the Republicans are OK with being involved in our affairs. It's so hard to keep track of which ones are "sticking their noses where they don't belong" and which ones are being "snubbed" when the President doesn't support their leaders.

It will be interesting to find out many lies that Romney told in his visit. He is such a GREAT LIAR, as he has proved throughout the campaign.

I can't believe anything that Ryan and his extremist friend Romney say. They are bent on helping the rich at the expense of the disadvantaged people on Medicare, Medicaid and the rest of the 99 percent of Americans.

Romney be better suited to teaching "tax evasion" courses at a Massachusetts community college, than running our GREAT COUNTRY!

P.S - Curmudgeon -- You are WRONG on the "You build it," statement by Obama, which was, of course taken out of context. Check the Washingon Post or any legitimate fact checker and they say the same. Don't spread your incorrect/untruthful information here, as so many Republicans do, please. It makes your political party -- look ignorant.

Marc...."I think his honesty is refreshing." Really? I think it's frightening. In a moment of candor he told the Russian Bear to "wait until after the election." What other surprises await us if Romney does not prevail? The only reason he even bothered to give Netenayhu some cell phone time is because he left himself open to criticism when he decided that Whoopi and friends were more important than the "the time bomb" which is Iran. Israel is concerned with its' own survival in light of the Iranians Nazi-like comments earlier in the week. If Israel does act, the U.S. will be forced (per the Iranians) to respond when our bases in the region are attacked. But, then again, the President is more concerned that the Muslims aren't offended by some crappy piece of You tube junk, than he is about confronting an issue that is more likely to lead to more conflict in a region that would be happy to return to the 7th Century. Now, I'll go back to reading Woodward's book "The Price of Politics" so that I can learn all about Mr. Obama's leadership qualities.

OK. And I'll go back to watching The Avengers so I can learn all about how Barack Obama, much like Captain America, can champion for the rights of all people and not just the weathiest Americans.
