Lewis Road Accident Investigation Continuing
Several parts of the investigation are still pending. No charges have been announced.
Limerick Township police and county authorities continue to investigate last week's fatal crash on Lewis Road that killed a jogger near the Chesterbrook Academy day care center.
Royersford resident Merinda Thompson died when she was struck from behind as she jogged along Lewis Road. The driver, an 18-year-old male, was treated for minor injuries.
Limerick Township Police Chief William Albany said in an email Thursday that authorities "are still waiting on the lab results for [the driver's] blood and the phone activity report from the cell phone provider."
The cell-phone service provider has a legal process to follow before they will release records, Albany said, and blood tests are sent to a lab for processing.
Those results, the cell phone records and the rest of the findings from the investigation will determine whether charges are filed against the driver.
"The time being expended in this case is not unusual," Albany said.

I agree, he's 18 and he should be named. IEven thought I'm pretty certain every local w/ a kid in the high school already knows his name.

I think that 18 or not this boy is facing a lifetime of regret for what he did. It was an accident. A tragedy for both families. To name names before the results of investigation are in just opens this boy up to ridicule he may not deserve.
I am in no way trying to excuse the seriousness of this accident, but what if that is all it was.
In any case, i am praying for both families.

Please do not post any name you believe may be the driver in this situation.
If there are charges filed, his name will be public record and will be released. Whether you are sure or not, he is entitled to the same privacy that anyone involved in a police investigation is granted.
Innocent until proven guilty applies to everyone.

If I am in a fender bender, my name goes in the paper, providing that I am not a minor. This is no different. The victim was named right quickly, and they did nothing wrong. Name names. Let the courts shake out the rest.

If you are in a fender-bender, your name only goes in the paper if authorities charged you with something. Again, there are still no charges filed. If and when the driver is charged with something, his name will be printed.

I guess journalism class eliminated the 5 Ws. No crimes here.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on our stories. However, we have a policy NOT to print names if there is neither an injury or a charge filed. This person has had neither. Citing sources from CBS does not exemplify the policies of Patch. We very much appreciate your readership and the sharing of your opinions here, but we do have strict policies which we will not break.

Melissa, I appreciate your considerate response. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance for what? An adventure ride? And I quote PATCH " The 18-year-old male driver of the Focus sustained what Albany called minor injuries and was transported to Phoenixville Hospital for treatment." For injuries, or a flu shot? And we wonder what is killing the print media? This was an unfortunate accident which killed a woman. The chances that the driver did not maintain control of his car( a violation), is slim or none. Let's call it what it is and report what we know..no one has to be implicated in a crime to do that.

Thank you again, Local, for sharing your perspective. I apologize, there were minor injuries, but nothing that would garner a public post. I overlooked that line, and you make a solid point. In my professional journalistic opinion, naming this individual WOULD implicate he did something wrong or committed a crime. A woman has died, and the public is often quick to make judgement, name printed or not. Patch is here to be a community forum, and I welcome all discussions on the topic. I won't however, change our decision on this matter. As soon as we are able to provide official details, that are a matter of public record, we will release them. I appreciate the public's desire to know, but in this instance, I do not feel it is anyone's best interest to print the name of a person who has not committed any crime or been charged as such. Thanks again for both reading and partaking in lively discussion.

According to your fellow journalist at The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette an accident report is a public record - http://old.post-gazette.com/firstamendment/20020220publicrecordfreeholdp9.asp

Seriously...what difference does it make whether this kid is named now or later? What exactly are you planning on doing with that one little bit of information? Who cares...the people who NEED to know are the ones doing the investigation. I suppose you'll just have to be patient and wait for their findings.

Ask any Spring-Ford HS SENIOR & you will get the name! I'm sure by now most of the H.S. kids know who it was. Its all hear say but it's a good possibility drugs were involved. The full story will be out soon enough
