Five Things to do With Your Kids This Earth Day

Today marks Earth Day's 41st birthday. Plan to commemorate the occasion with your family.

Don't let Earth Day go by without a mention in your house today. Check out these quick and easy ways to talk to your family about the importance of respecting the resources we all enjoy on our planet.

  1. Talk to your kids about landfills. Watch this video with them to help educate them about where their garbage goes after it’s thrown in the trash can.
  2. Plant a spider plant or a philodendron to clean the air in your home. A joint study conducted by NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America provided scientific proof that houseplants can reduce the amount of indoor pollutants in homes and offices. Check out this list of beneficial houseplants, and do some planting with the kids today.
  3. Share this video about the Zero Waste Family with your family. This California family doesn’t make any trash—none!
  4. Work as a family to stop junk mail. How many Comcast and Verizon letters did you get in the mail this week?  Fill out this form, which will cut down on the amount of junk mail in your mailbox. Consider signing this petition for a “Do Not Mail” registry.
  5. Choose an Earth Day craft for a little extra reminder every day about the importance of preserving our natural resources.

Earth Day is our largest, most widely celebrated international environmental event. Share it with your kids to make sure it has many more birthdays.
