Favorite Authors Tempt Readers Online

From essays to speeches to free chapters, some of our much loved book writers offer bonus material on their websites.

Many best-selling authors spend a lot of time crafting a website. This allows them to share information about upcoming projects and to connect with their readers. Some of these author websites include hidden gems. Here are a few I've come across recently:

  • Twilight fans will adore Stephenie Meyer's, Midnight Sun, a 264-page draft of the beginning of the series, all from Edward’s perspective. It's only available online.
  • The always hilarious Janet Evanovich has an upbeat website. She offers a monthly contest, character profiles and fun facts pertaining to her books. She also helps aspiring writers with steps to getting published and tips for writing query letters.
  • Can’t get enough of author Alice Hoffman? Check out some of her online essays and speeches.
  • Writer Lisa Scottoline tempts readers with the first chapter of her latest book, Save Me. This Philadelphia Inquirer columnist, posts her weekly Chick Wit column on her site as well. Area book clubs may want to check out information on her upcoming 6th Annual Big Book Club Party. Lisa hosts the party at her Chester County home and all registered book clubs are invited.
  • Jodi Picoult has posted numerous podcasts on a variety of topics on her website.
  • James Patterson is offering the first 20 chapters of his newest family book, Middle School- The Worst Years of My Life. The story is about Rafe, a new middle schooler who sets out to try to break every rule in his school's Code of Conduct. Patterson's Read Kiddo Read program shares great kid book recommendations and educators may want to look at the free activities and lesson plans listed on the site.
  • Jennifer Chiaverni is the author of the Elm Creek Quilt series. Her website offers quilt patterns and fabric collections featured in her books.

The next time you finish a great book, check to see if the author has a website. You just may find a new treasure waiting for you.
