College + Church + Beer?

Local church reaches out to community with 'Tavern Talks' on Thursday nights.

You might be running out of excuses as why NOT to go to church. Sure, getting up on a Sunday can be a drag. But, one local congregation has gone out of its way to bring the church to you. It comes, even if you are at the bar.

St. Luke's United Church of Christ (UCC), located at 200 W. Main St., in Trappe, has brought its sermons out from behind the pulpit and into the Perkiomen Valley communities. Instead of waiting for parishioners to come to them, they've found ways to bring church to the public.

"Tavern Talks" is just one such venture. St. Luke's, along with Ursinus College, sponsors the Thursday night events once a month. Where do they meet up? Well, the local watering hole, of course.

Appalacian Brewing Company (ABC), a craft-beer brewery, restaurant and pub, plays host to the sessions, each third Thursday of the month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at ABC.

On Thursday, March 21, the Tavern Talk will be about "Liars! Spies! Harps!" and will feature Betsy Chapman, a Celtic harpist.

Prayer and Peace services, a "Soul Cafe" and adult bible study groups are also formed at the church to make religion applicable and approachable, no matter what your schedule.

All are welcome to attend Tavern Talks programs. For more information on the schedule, visit the St. Luke's website here.
